About The Department

Computer science is one of the most dynamic scientific and professional fields today, characterized by exceptionally rapid development, a broad range of applications and a strong impact on almost every sphere of modern society. The intensive development of artificial intelligence further accelerates technological change, opens up new directions of research and brings numerous scientific, technological and societal challenges. In such an environment, high-quality education and research play a key role in developing new knowledge and technologies, whose results find their way into practical applications ever more quickly.

The Department of Computer Science and Informatics of the Faculty of Mathematics, University of Belgrade, was officially established in 1987, while its roots go back to 1961, when the teaching of computer science courses began at the Faculty of Mathematics. Today, the Department teaches approximately 60 courses in computer science and informatics in the undergraduate and master's academic programmes, as well as in the doctoral academic programme in Computer Science.

Our mission is:

  • to educate top-level experts in computer science and informatics, prepared to respond to the challenges of modern technological development;
  • to continuously improve the quality of teaching and research, striving for excellence in both;
  • to contribute, through our knowledge, research and activities, to the development of the Faculty of Mathematics, the academic community and society as a whole.

Research in computer science has a long and rich tradition at the Faculty of Mathematics. In addition to its educational role, the Department is an active participant in research at the University of Belgrade. Its members publish papers in leading international scientific journals and at prestigious international conferences, participate in national and international research projects, collaborate with numerous universities and research institutions in Serbia and abroad, and take part in organizing major scientific events. Particular attention is paid to involving young researchers and doctoral students in current research.

In the 2025/26 academic year, the Department has 53 members (20 women and 33 men), including 21 faculty members and 32 teaching assistants and associates.

The Department takes particular pride in its current and former students. Our graduates build successful careers at leading domestic and international technology companies, research institutions and other organizations that apply modern information technologies. Many continue their education and research at prestigious universities around the world, while some pursue academic careers at the Faculty of Mathematics and other faculties of the University of Belgrade. Their professional and scientific achievements confirm the quality of the education they received and are a strong incentive for the further development of the Department.

The Head of the Department is Full Professor Dr Milena Vujošević Janičić.
